Important commercial cultivars of Iranian Pistachio

(Large, lengthy and almond shape), known in international market as “Super Long Pistachio”.
- Ahmad Aghaei Pistachio

(Lengthy and almond shape), known in international market as “Long Pistachio”.
- Fandoghi Pistachio

(Round shape and small, slightly greater than hazelnut), known in international market as “Round Pistachio”.
- Kalle Qouchi Pistachio

(Large and round), known in international commerce as “Jumbo Pistachio”
- Badami Pistachio
(Almond shape), known in international market as “Row Pistachio” or “Row Long Pistachio”.
Remark: In general, those cultivars with length to width ratio >1.5 are known as “Badami” and those with the ratio <1.5 are referred to as “Fandoghi“.

- Super Long Pistachio (Akbari)
Akbari cultivar is one of the most tradable economic commercial cultivars of pistachio in Iran. Its appearance is almond shape, lengthy and great, slightly similar to Ahmad Aghaei cultivar. Akbari pistachio is very marketable and competitive, with its particular customers and followers in the world. It is more expensive than other cultivars, as is a smiling (open-mouthed) lengthy and beautiful nut. This Pistachio is well known as a luxury product for its appearance and nature. The other advantage of Akbari pistachio is that it is convenient to crack and eat. It contains 19.6% protein, and 53.2% oil. Akbari is 22 ounce per nut, and 55 gr kernels are produced per 100 gr dried nut.

- Long Pistachio (Ahmad Aghaei)
Ahmad Aghaei is one of the prominent commercial pistachio cultivars in Iran. It is famous and marketable just like Akbari Pistachio for its Ivory-colored shell and red colored kernel, apparent from the smiling shell, so its cultivation has been developing in many regions of Iran.
Ahmad Aghaei pistachio price is approximately as much as Akbari in the market. More than 98% of Ahmad Aghaei pistachios are open-mouthed (smiling). Its nut appearance is almond shape and lengthy. It contains 16% protein and 58-59 % oil in kernel.

- Jumbo Pistachio (Kalle Qouchi)
Kalle Qouchi appearance is like Fandoghi pistachio for its round shape but they are easily distinguishable as Kalle Qouchi is slightly larger and longer, as its name suggests. It should be noticed that Kalle Qouchi open mouth (smiling) is more apparent than Fandoghi so the kernel is more detectable. Another specification makes 99% Kalle Qouchi pistachios distinctive from others, is the wrinkles/notches observable in its end Ivory colored shell which yields to its beauty comparing with other cultivars.
The Ivory –colored shell split seems the same both in back and forth sides. The Ivory color is also a medium dark white. Kalle Qouchi pistachio is more expensive than Fandoghi. It is 17.1 gr per dried nut and is 13.20 mm long and 12.84 mm wide.

- Round Pistachio (Fandoghi)
Fandoghi cultivar is a common commercial pistachio in Iran which is mostly compatible with major cultivation areas in the country. Pistachio size is the distinctive specification between different cultivars and Fandoghi, as its name suggests, is a round (hazelnut) shape but slightly greater than hazelnut. Its shell is Ivory-beige colored. Fandoghi pistachio is more cost effective and low-priced for its smaller size comparing with other cultivars.
